FAQ about Technology
1. What is ADSL technology?
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line): Is a broadband connection technology which allows the simultaneous use of conventional telephone lines for high speed data transfer and use of the telephone.
2. What does the acronym ADSL mean?
ADSL is an acronym for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, which means:
Asymmetric: A data reception speed greater than the speed used to send data.
Digital: Information is transmitted in binary numbers (bits).
Subscriber: Person or entity that contracts the service.
Line: Dual copper wire which supports telephone and data transmissions
3. What does asymmetric mean?
Asymmetric means that the speed for downloading data from the net is greater than the speed used to send data.
4. Does asymmetry affect quality of service?
Asymmetry does not affect the quality of service to clients, due mainly to the fact that they receive more data than they send.
5. How does ADSL work?
It is a technology for the transmission of voice and data that functions by using three independent channels with different bandwidths (one exclusively for voice, one for downloading information and the last one for transmitting information).
6. Can I use the telephone while I am connected to the Internet with ADSL?
Yes, you can make or receive calls at the same time that you are connected to the Internet.
7. If I access the Internet using ADSL, is the quality of the telephone call diminished?
No. The quality of the telephone connection remains the same.
8. Can I send a fax using the ADSL line?
Yes, you can use all of the applications normally used on a conventional telephone line.
9. Is the contracted line speed real?
ICE offers different speeds; nevertheless, the real navigation speed on the Internet will also vary with regard to: the customer’s computer, the infrastructure, the congestion of the page that is accessed, the protocols used and the capacity of the server being accessed. On some occasions the speed allowed by ADSL is not achieved; due to the Internets own characteristics, which are not under ICE’s or any other provider’s control.
10. Can I install ADSL on any telephone line?
No, due to the fact that some telephone lines do not have the required technology for the installation of ADSL.
11. Which are the lines in which ADSL can not be installed?
The lines in which ADSL can not be installed on lines supported by technologies such as: Electronics on the Net and WLL.
